Disillusion of the American Dream Reflected in the Major Characters of The Great Gatsby
Abstract

Fitzgerald is widely regarded as one of the great American writers in the twentieth century. The Great Gatsby is Fitzgerald’s perfect and influential novel which is also considered a seminal work on the disillusion of the American Dream. Fitzgerald explored the relationship between love and money.
Gatsby makes great efforts to pursue his “American Dream”. He mistakenly believes that money can buy back love and happiness, so he spends his all life in pursuing wealth. He believes only wealth can win Daisy back, however, he gets nothing from his money and his dream and his life are lost at last. Gatsby’s whole life is a tragedy. The cruel fact breaks his dream. The people of the Jazz Age are money worship and irresponsible. My paper mainly analyses the characters in the novel. The three major characters are the typical ones of that age. Through the description of the disillusion of Gatsby’ dream, we can deeply reveal the formation, the development and the burst.
