Business Competitive Strategy for Low Cost Airlines in China
Rationale
The structure of civil aviation industry in China has been
changed dramatically in the past years, the policies which
are made by the government now allow the airlines operated
by different ownership, this means the airline can be private
not only state-owned. The current situation is three big state-owned
civil aviation groups have formed, and more and more private
and joint-stock small airlines are operating in the current
civil aviation market of China. They use limited resources
to operate such as capital, aircraft, and employees etc.,
to compete with the big full service airlines which are state-owned
airlines. In other way the civil aviation market has a huge
potential due to the population of China and increasing revenue
of people. According to the current situation of market how
to compete with the big full service airlines in this complex
market for these low cost airlines can is the major study
area in my project. Through research to analyze the position
of small airlines within the industry and how to choose suitable
competitive strategies to gain more market power to them.
All of analyses will base on theories of competitive strategy,
cost management theories and through economic theories to
analysis how does the change of demand impact to the small
airlines.
Research question and objective:
Question: How to get success for small low cost airlines within
the complex environment of market in China?
What are the major competitive advantages for the small low
cost airlines?
Objectives: Identify the suitable strategies for small airlines
to develop themselves within the industry.
Research methods:
Case study will be used and through questionnaire to analysis
the current competitive strategies are used by the small airlines.
The data and reports which are issued by the government will
be used to analysis the current position of industry and use
to support the points which are discussed.
A review in the area of theories of business competitive
strategies and economic will be prepared, and will be used
as tools to analysis include in the project.

Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Research Question
I has been interested in the air transportation and paid much
attention to the analysis of the competitive strategies of
foreign and domestic low cost aviation. The thesis reviews
some analysis of the overseas low cost aviation’s operation
mode, current operation mode of domestic low cost airlines,
the status and development of domestic low cost air transportation
marketing and the main obstacles of low cost operation in
China. With the development of domestic air market, the mainstream
state-owned airlines seize the most market, and the foreign
airlines also show great interest in China air market. Therefore,
it is difficult for the small low cost aviation to succeed
in operating. Then the research question of the thesis is
how to succeed for small low cost airlines within the complex
environment of market in China, and the major competitive
strategies for the small low cost airlines.
1.2 Research Objective
In recent years, the low-cost international air waves rise
all over the world. Except the old low cost airlines like
Southwest Airlines, in Europe Ireland-based Ryanair, Britain's
Easyjet, Asian Qantas Airlines and others gain outstanding
achievement and become famous stars in their field after their
establishment. The open Chinese economy more and more affect
the world economy development through different extent. On
one hand the deepening of China's economic reform and the
development of global economic integration bring development
opportunity to Chinese aviation industry. On the other hand,
it brings much more competitive stress. Only the fittest can
survive and develop. China's airlines future and the fate
of each company will depend on each airline's position in
the new environment. In the new market environment, in order
to meet the challenges and get chance of survival and development
for China's airlines, the most crucial point is its ability
to take advantage of opportunities to develop, adhere to the
strategy of low-cost, and develop the true sense of the low-cost
airlines. But in China the low cost room for airlines is limited,
so it is much more difficult for small low cost aviation in
China to succeed in the complex market. In order to become
a true-sense low cost aviation, and succeed in the complex
market, it is necessary for them to find the competitive strategies.
Meanwhile it is important to know the current market environment,
the position of small low cost aviation in the domestic air
transportation, the advantages and weakness compared with
foreign airlines. The key point is to find competitive strategies
to adopt based on self condition in Chinese market, which
is important to Chinese aviation industry and at the same
time is the research objectives of this thesis.
1.3 Rationale for Research Area Chosen
Southwest Airlines of United States in 1978 first proposed
the concept of low-cost operators. During 20-year period after
