On Counterculture and Culture Jamming
1. Introduction
Heath and Potter argue that Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain
might be interpreted as "the victim of a false idea-the
idea of counterculture." Using Cobain's suicide as an
opening anecdote to dramatize their argument, they then proceed
to argue that culture is not a reliable vehicle for political
change. In other words, countercultures are not themselves
productive means to change the world for the better. On the
other hand, Kalle Lasn, argues the opposite in his book, Culture
Jam. In this excerpt from the book, he cites the 1960s Situationists
and other counterculture heroes as inspiration for contemporary
culture jamming. Countercultures, he argues elsewhere, are
defined by their use of culture-jamming techniques to make
social change possible. Based on the above two opinions on
counterculture and culture jamming, this essay will discuss
the situation contemporary culture.
. Heath and Potter argue in their AC640 reading, "The
Birth of Counterculture, that Nirvana lead singer Kurt Cobain
might be interpreted as "the victim of a false idea-the
idea of counterculture." Using Cobain's suicide as an
opening anecdote to dramatize their argument, they then proceed
to argue that culture is not a reliable vehicle for political
change. In other words, countercultures are not themselves
productive means to change the world for the better.
Vancouver-based writer Kalle Lasn, publisher of Adbusters
magazine, argues the opposite in his book, Culture Jam. In
this excerpt from the book, he cites the 1960s Situationists
and other counterculture heroes as inspiration for contemporary
culture jamming. Culture jamming refers to the use of various
creative techniques-such as political theatre and independent
media-to expose the ideological content of popular culture,
and to oppose the creeping commercialization of the public
sphere. Countercultures, he argues elsewhere, are defined
by their use of culture-jamming techniques to make social
change possible.

The Grant and Wood chapter on the nature of the cultural
commodity, "Curious Economics," is a very thorough
discussion of what cultural goods are and how the cultural
marketplace behaves. Use this knowledge of the cultural commodity
and the market to evaluate the potential of counterculture
as an agent of political and social change.
Demonstrating understanding of the arguments from The Rebel
Sell chapter, the "Curious Economics" chapter, and
the Culture Jam excerpt, answer the following question:
Is counterculture viable and culture-jamming effective in
our time?
Or are these capacities in our society either unnecessary
or, alternately, neutralized within our liberal, plural, and
capitalist culture?
论文写作要求:
course: government, public policy and the law(political communication)
word limited: 5-6 pages, double spaces
grades: minisiam:18/20
advice on writing the answers :
The general intention of this final exam is two-fold:
(i) to encourage you to think for yourselves, as is appropriate
to a
graduate school paper
(ii) to give you “real-world” problems to reflect on, and
in some cases,
real-world problems as articulated by important commentators
past and
present like Bernays and Sullivan
The questions relate to weeks 5-10 inclusive, representing
the last three
units of the course. There is also an open question option
indicated below.
A double-spaced 5-6 page limit for each question is suggested.
In your answer, it is important to (a) demonstrate your knowledge
of
relevant key concepts; (b) demonstrate your knowledge of the
relevant
reading(s), unit notes, and where relevant, other course materials;
and (c)
to write with style, verve, enthusiasm, and understanding.
Spelling and
grammar, needless to say, do matter. When using a key concept,
I suggest
you very briefly define it in your own words so as to show
me that you
understand the term.
On citation: Use the readings and unit notes as you would
a source in a
research paper. That is, if you are paraphrasing an idea from
the textbook
or unit notes, or want to quote a passage, offer the source
(an author from
the package, Black) plus a page number in ( ) at the end of
the sentence.
For example: “Segal relates ideas about technological utopia
to actual
developments in American society inspired by utopian writings”
(Segal,
p.45). I don’t need full APA citation or a works cited page
unless you’re
using sources that are not immediately part of the course.
